With trembling, perfectly manicured hands, Richard reached up and unlatched the door.

The plaza slowly cleared as the flashing red and blue lights of federal vehicles illuminated the fading afternoon.

Officer Miller was shoved into the back of a transport van, his career over, facing a decade in federal prison. Richard Sterling was dragged out of his luxury SUV, his custom suit wrinkled, screaming for a lawyer as the FBI agents coldly read him his rights.

Agent Hayes—the woman in the trench coat—picked up the DOJ envelope from the ground, brushed the dust off the seal, and handed it to Judge Vance. The final nail in Richard’s coffin was secure.

Elijah stood quietly by his 1968 Impala. The federal medics had checked his shoulder, wrapping it carefully. It hurt, but it was a familiar pain. The pain of surviving.

Sarah walked over to him, her eyes red but her posture straight. She looked at the vintage car, then at her father.

"Are you okay, Dad?" she asked softly.

Elijah looked across the plaza, watching the transport van haul his deceitful son-in-law away. He thought about the stolen money that would be returned, the divorce papers that would be filed tomorrow, and the peace that would finally return to his family.

He reached out, his calloused hand gently polishing a smudge off the chrome of his beloved Chevy.

"I'm fine, Sarah," Elijah smiled, his eyes twinkling with a fierce, quiet pride. "Some things—and some men—are just built to last."

He opened the passenger door for his daughter. They got in, the engine roaring to life with a deep, muscular growl, and drove away from the courthouse, leaving the wreckage of Richard’s lies in the rearview mirror.
