The airport security checkpoint was a landscape of harsh, cool fluorescent lighting and relentless grey steel. The air felt sterile, devoid of any warmth, perfectly matching the calculated trap that had just been set. Standing near the metal conveyor belt was a man who looked entirely out of place among the tired travelers. He was a heavily muscled African American man in his early forties, his head shaved smooth. He wore a deep burgundy button-down shirt, the sleeves rolled up to reveal thick, powerful forearms. The rich, dark color of his shirt was a vibrant, commanding anomaly against the cold blues and greys of the terminal.

Opposite him stood two security guards, their light powder blue uniforms projecting a false sense of benign, bureaucratic authority. The older guard, a heavyset man with a salt-and-pepper crew cut, sported a smug, rehearsed smile as he unzipped the passenger’s black suitcase. The younger guard stood slightly behind him, his posture stiff with nervous, barely concealed anticipation.

"Let's take a look inside," the older guard announced, his voice carrying an artificial theatricality designed to draw the attention of nearby passengers.
