The silver handcuffs on the older guard's duty belt suddenly looked less like tools of authority and more like a pair of iron weights ready to drag him to the bottom of the ocean. He didn't reach for them. He stood completely frozen, the powder blue of his uniform now seeming to highlight his cowardice rather than his authority.

The unbearable tension finally shattered the younger guard. He had been trembling since the agent first looked up at the ceiling, but the sight of the extended wrists completely broke his resolve. He was a junior officer, dragged into a miserable extortion scheme by a senior partner, and he suddenly realized he was about to spend the best years of his life in a federal penitentiary.

"I told you, Gary!" the younger guard hissed, his voice cracking with sheer panic. He backed away from the metal table, frantically waving his hands in a gesture of absolute surrender. "I told you he looked like the wrong guy to pull this on! I'm not going down for this!"

"Shut your mouth!" the older guard barked, his voice laced with the desperate, ugly panic of a cornered animal. He looked wildly around the checkpoint, realizing that the surrounding passengers had stopped moving. Dozens of eyes were now fixed entirely on them. The quiet, manufactured drama he had tried to stage had turned into a glaring public spectacle.
