The crisp, golden morning of mid-October settled over the small, independent fueling station known as Kellerman’s. The air was thick with the nostalgic, earthy scent of fallen oak leaves mixed with the faint, sharp tang of gasoline. At forty-eight, Marcus Kellerman appreciated these quiet moments. He was a striking African American man with a rugged, sharply angled jawline covered in a neatly trimmed, salt-and-pepper stubble. His broad shoulders and athletic build were a testament to decades of hard work, currently wrapped in a durable, dark blue denim shirt and faded classic jeans.

Kellerman’s Gas Station was a relic of a bygone era, one of the last family-owned full-service stations in the county. Marcus’s father had built it from the ground up in the 1970s, back when this area was nothing but sprawling farmland and dirt roads. Today, the landscape had drastically changed. Towering residential developments and gated communities had slowly encroached on the edges of Marcus’s property.

Despite his incredibly casual appearance, Marcus was far from a simple pump attendant. He was the CEO of Kellerman Energy Solutions, a multi-million dollar regional distribution network. He owned fifty gas stations across the state, a fleet of tanker trucks, and prime commercial real estate. However, every Sunday morning, Marcus left his tailored suits and corporate boardrooms behind. He came to this specific, original station to work the pumps himself, to honor his late father’s legacy, and to keep his feet firmly planted on the ground.

As he wiped down the vintage chrome of Pump Number Four, he watched the neighborhood wake up. People walking their dogs waved at him, and early commuters honked their horns in greeting. It was supposed to be a peaceful, reflective Sunday. He had a fresh cup of black coffee resting on the hood of his restored dark grey pickup truck, and the autumn breeze was perfectly crisp. But the tranquility of the morning was about to be shattered by the arrival of a woman who believed the world, and everything in it, revolved entirely around her.

The peace of the morning was abruptly broken by the aggressive screech of tires. A pristine, oversized white luxury SUV swerved off the main road and aggressively hopped the curb, tearing into the station’s driveway at an unsafe speed. The vehicle slammed on its brakes directly in front of Marcus, parking diagonally across two pumping bays and effectively blocking anyone else from entering.

The driver’s side door swung open violently, and out stepped a woman who radiated a deeply practiced, toxic aura of entitlement. She appeared to be in her mid-fifties, her face set in a permanent, sharp scowl. Her blonde hair was styled into a voluminous, meticulously hair-sprayed bob that didn't move an inch in the autumn wind. She was dressed in a crisp white silk blouse tucked into tailored dark navy slacks, paired with expensive black heels that clicked aggressively against the concrete.
