Officer Davis held up her hands, trying to slow the woman down. "Okay, ma'am, please take a breath. Just step back and tell me exactly what happened, one at a time."

"There is nothing to figure out!" Brenda screeched, outraged that the officer wasn't immediately drawing her weapon. "He is a thief and a thug! Arrest him right now!"

Officer Davis took a deep breath, her professional training kicking in. She stepped between Brenda and Marcus, establishing a physical barrier. She looked at Marcus, who hadn't moved an inch, and then back to the irate woman in the white silk blouse.

"Ma'am, please lower your voice," Officer Davis said firmly. "Now, you said he was stealing community property? What property is that?"

"The fuel!" Brenda yelled, gesturing wildly at the gas pumps. "The new zoning laws dictate that this station is within our HOA's jurisdiction! That means the gasoline belongs to the community for landscaping and maintenance. I demanded he release it to me, and he refused! He is stealing from the neighborhood!"

Officer Davis blinked, her face scrunching up in profound confusion. "Ma'am, an HOA does not have the authority to commandeer a privately owned gas station. That's not how property laws work."

Brenda’s eyes went wide with fury behind her sunglasses. "Are you arguing with me?! I am the President! I know the law better than a beat cop! He refused me fuel, he threatened an HOA officer on community property, and he made me fear for my life!"

Officer Davis turned her attention to Marcus, who was watching the entire exchange with the quiet amusement of a man watching a terrible play. "Sir," Davis said, her tone cautious but respectful. "Can you tell me your side of this?"

"It's very simple, Officer," Marcus said, his voice deep and calm, a stark contrast to Brenda’s shrieking. "She demanded hundreds of dollars of free premium gasoline for her HOA. I told her no. Refusing to give her my gas isn't a crime."

Brenda could not handle being contradicted, especially not by a working-class man in front of a police officer. Her reality was cracking, and she responded the only way she knew how: with maximum aggression.

She stomped her foot on the concrete, pointing her finger furiously at Officer Davis. "I am not going to stand here and be humiliated by a pump jockey and an incompetent cop! I am the HOA President! I have powerful friends in this city! You will make him cooperate and give me my fuel, or you will put him in cuffs right this second!"

Officer Davis frowned, her patience finally wearing thin. She unclipped a small notepad from her chest pocket. "Ma'am, if you continue to yell and demand false arrests, I will cite you for misuse of the 911 emergency system. Now, step back."
