She aggressively dialed 911, pacing back and forth in front of the pumps. Marcus didn't move to stop her. In fact, he leaned back against the fuel pump, looking incredibly relaxed. He watched her perform her routine, knowing exactly how this was going to play out.
"Yes, hello? Police? I need an officer at Kellerman’s Gas Station immediately!" Brenda cried into the phone, her voice suddenly adopting a high-pitched, trembling tone of a terrified victim. "Yes, I am an elected community official, and I am currently being threatened by an aggressive, hostile employee! He is refusing to release community resources to me, he is acting incredibly unstable, and I fear for my physical safety! Please hurry, he's looking at me like he wants to attack me!"
Marcus couldn't help but shake his head. The blatant fabrication was almost impressive. She hung up the phone and shot Marcus a smug, triumphant smirk.
"They are on their way," she declared proudly. "You are going to jail for theft of community property and threatening a public official. I hope you enjoy unemployment."
"I think I'll manage," Marcus replied softly, taking another sip of his coffee, perfectly content to wait for the authorities to arrive.
Less than five minutes later, the wail of a police siren pierced the quiet autumn morning. A black and white patrol cruiser sped down the street, pulling into the gas station with its lights flashing brightly against the grey pavement.
The vehicle parked near the air pumps, and Officer Sarah Davis stepped out. Officer Davis was a relatively young patrol cop, perhaps in her early thirties, with her brown hair pulled back tightly into a neat ponytail. She looked sharp, professional, and already exhausted by the prospect of whatever nonsense she had been called to deal with. She rested her hand near the radio on her duty belt, her eyes scanning the scene.
She saw Brenda, standing in a posture of exaggerated distress by her luxury SUV, and she saw Marcus, a large, imposing Black man in a denim shirt, calmly drinking coffee by the pumps.
Before Officer Davis could even fully close her car door, Brenda was on the move. She rushed toward the officer, waving her arms frantically, entirely ignoring any semblance of police protocol.
"Officer! Thank God you're here!" Brenda shouted, pointing her manicured finger directly at Marcus. "That man is a menace! I came here to collect the mandatory fuel allotment for the Oak Creek HOA, and he completely lost his mind! He verbally assaulted me, threatened to destroy my vehicle, and is illegally hoarding community property!"
