For Mark, the quiet suburban streets of Whispering Pines were supposed to be a sanctuary. At thirty-eight, Mark was a man who appreciated the simple things: a well-maintained lawn, a quiet evening on the porch, and the deep, throaty roar of a combustion engine. He was a Caucasian male, built like a middleweight boxer, with broad shoulders and a sharply angled jawline dusted with a light brown stubble. He moved with a calculated, quiet efficiency that hinted at a life far more intense than his current surroundings suggested.

Mark had just finished unloading his newest acquisition from his trailer: a brand-new, matte black All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV). The machine was a beast, designed for rugged mountain trails and deep mud, completely out of place on the pristine asphalt of his driveway. It was his weekend escape. He parked it right in front of his open garage, intending to give it a thorough inspection before taking it up to the cabin on Saturday.

He wore a fitted navy-blue polo shirt and tan khakis, looking every bit the relaxed suburban homeowner. However, beneath that casual exterior was a man who spent his weekdays navigating high-stakes, dangerous operations. Mark was a Senior Special Agent for a federal task force, specializing in organized crime and grand theft. He dealt with the worst society had to offer. He had moved to this neighborhood specifically to leave the chaos at work. Unfortunately, the chaos was about to walk right up his driveway.

Brenda was the undisputed tyrant of Whispering Pines. As the President of the Homeowners Association, she treated the neighborhood like her own personal kingdom. Brenda was in her early fifties, with a sharply cut blonde bob that never seemed to move in the wind and a wardrobe consisting almost entirely of aggressive, bright colors. Today, she was draped in a blindingly crimson red blazer over a crisp white blouse.
