"Exactly," Brenda said, a wicked, triumphant smile spreading across her heavily made-up face. "Let's go teach Mr. Henderson a lesson about how things work in Whispering Pines."

Mark was standing inside his garage, wiping his hands on a shop towel, when he heard the heavy footsteps on his driveway. He stepped out to find a woman in a red blazer waving a stack of papers furiously in the air, while a muscular young man in a tank top strutted past her, making a beeline directly for the black ATV.

Mark’s eyes narrowed. His posture instantly shifted from relaxed homeowner to a highly alert, defensive stance.

"Excuse me," Mark said, his voice calm but carrying a heavy, warning undertone. "Can I help you?"

Brenda didn't offer a greeting. She thrust the clipboard forward, nearly shoving it into Mark's chest. "You are in direct violation of Section 4, Paragraph B of the Whispering Pines HOA charter! That recreational vehicle is an eyesore and a hazard. It is being confiscated until you pay the appropriate fines."

Mark stared at her, completely unfazed by the paper waving. He glanced past her and saw Tyler throwing a leg over the seat of the brand-new ATV. The sheer audacity of the act made the muscles in Mark's jaw clench.

Brenda continued her shrill tirade, completely oblivious to the dangerous shift in Mark's demeanor. "My son is enforcing HOA rules you keep refusing to follow," she declared proudly, gesturing to Tyler.

Mark held up both hands, palms facing outward, a universal gesture to stop. He took a half-step forward, his voice dropping into a cold, hard register. "Your HOA has no authority over this property."

Sitting comfortably on the ATV, Tyler gripped the handlebars and let out a mocking, arrogant laugh. He looked down at Mark as if the older man were a nuisance. "Relax, man," Tyler sneered, patting the gas tank of the four-wheeler. "We're just moving it where it belongs."
