Mark took a slow sip of his coffee, watching her approach with mild amusement. He had seen her around the neighborhood before—always pacing, always peering into people's yards. The neighbors referred to her as "Brenda, the HOA Enforcer," despite the fact that their street didn't actually have a Homeowners Association.
"Excuse me!" Brenda shouted, stopping right at the edge of his driveway. "What exactly do you think you're doing?"
Mark blinked. "Drinking coffee. On my porch."
"Don't play games with me," Brenda snapped, stepping closer, making sure her phone was recording every second. "I've seen you sitting here, watching families all day. You're casing the street, aren't you?"
Mark let out a dry laugh, shaking his head. "Lady, I live here. I'm just enjoying the morning."
