Brenda froze. The triumphant smile slid off her face, replaced by utter shock. "W-what? No! Not me! Him! You meant him!"
"No, ma'am. I mean you," the officer replied, grabbing her wrist and firmly securing the cuffs. "You have three active warrants for unpaid fines and failure to appear in court for prior harassment charges. You're under arrest."
"This is a mistake! I'm the victim here! I called you!" Brenda shrieked, her oversized sunglasses slipping down her nose as the officer began to escort her toward the back of the patrol car.
From the comfort of his wooden rocking chair, Mark watched the entire spectacle unfold. He didn't gloat. He didn't say a word. As the patrol car doors slammed shut and the police cruiser slowly drove away, taking the neighborhood's biggest nuisance with it, Mark simply raised his mug to the empty driveway.
