Chapter 1 - The Papers on the Table
Adaline Mercer kept washing the same white plate while her eldest daughter stood close enough for every word to feel like a shove.
“Friday is settled,” Claire said. “The room at Willow Crest is ready, and Daniel can bring your things.”
Adaline turned off the faucet. “My things?”
“Only what fits. The rest can stay until the house sells.”
From the kitchen doorway, Ruth folded her arms over her gray sweater. She did not smile, but she did not object either.
Adaline dried the plate slowly. “Who decided my house was selling?”
Claire exhaled. “We all did. After the kettle, the missed appointment, and the check you forgot writing, this is not safe anymore.”
