She placed a cream envelope in the center of the table.

Claire reached for it. “What is this?”

“Open it.”

Inside was a copy of a petition asking the county court to appoint Claire as Adaline’s legal guardian. It described Adaline as disoriented, financially reckless, and unable to understand the value of her property.

Daniel read the first page twice. “Claire, you filed this?”

“It was supposed to be private.”

“You wrote that Mom wandered outside at midnight.”

“She did.”

“I went to bring in the newspaper,” Adaline said.

“At midnight?”

“At eleven forty. The paper had been delivered to the wrong porch.”

Ruth took the petition. “There’s a doctor’s letter.”
