PART ONE — THE BOY WHO CAME HOME

“Please, sir. Give us until tomorrow, and we’ll move the cart.”

The old man folded his hands and bowed beside the small food stand.

His wife stood behind him in a faded apron, wiping her trembling hands against the fabric.

They had spent twenty-eight years selling soup, sandwiches, and hot coffee from the same corner in a working-class neighborhood outside Chicago.

That afternoon, a black luxury car stopped beside their cart.

I stepped out wearing a navy suit that probably cost more than the cart had when it was new.

The reaction on the old man’s face told me exactly what he thought.

Another developer.

Another wealthy stranger who had bought the street and come to push poor people out.

“We didn’t know the property had been sold,” he said. “We’re not trying to cause trouble.”

I stopped several feet from him.

For a moment, I could not speak.

The cart was smaller than I remembered.

The red-and-white canopy had faded almost to pink. One wheel leaned slightly inward. A wooden sign above the service window read:

MARTA AND LUIS—HOT MEALS MADE WITH LOVE

I had not seen that sign in twenty-three years.

But I had seen it almost every night in my dreams.

The old woman moved beside her husband.

“We’ll leave,” she said. “Just let us finish cleaning.”

I reached inside my coat and removed a thick envelope.

Luis stepped back.

“We don’t want charity.”

“It isn’t charity.”

I placed the envelope in his hands.

Inside were certified checks, paid medical accounts, and legal documents covering every debt I had been able to find in their names.

The money was enough to repair their house, replace the food cart, and let them stop working if they chose.

Luis stared at the papers.

Marta began to cry.

“Why would you do this for strangers?”
