“What did she say?”

“She said she had found something in your record. Before she could explain, Martin came back.”

“Do you remember her name?”

Luis thought for several seconds.

“Evelyn.”

Marta nodded.

“Evelyn Shaw.”

I looked toward my attorney, Natalie Brooks, who had remained near the car.

She was already searching the name on her phone.

“Evelyn Shaw worked for Bright Path for nineteen years,” she said. “She is still alive.”

“Where is she?”

“A nursing facility in Evanston.”

Marta looked toward the old building.

“And if Martin destroys the files tomorrow?”

Natalie closed her phone.

“Then we stop the demolition tonight.”

The sun had nearly disappeared.

The reunion I had imagined for two decades had lasted less than an hour.

I wanted to sit beside the cart and eat Marta’s soup.

I wanted to hear every detail of their lives.

Instead, I was standing on the street where my childhood had been stolen, watching the final light fade over a building Martin Vale wanted destroyed before morning.

Then Luis touched my shoulder.

“Go,” he said.

“I just found you.”

“And we’ll be here when you come back.”

The words struck me harder than he knew.

For most of my life, no place had ever promised to remain.

I looked at him.

“You’re sure?”

Marta took my hand.

“You came home, Gabriel.”

She smiled through tears.

“You don’t have to be afraid of losing us again.”
