By the time I was eighteen, almost all the money had been transferred into companies connected to Martin.

One of those companies was Sunbridge Housing.

Another was Northline Renewal.

Martin used my inheritance to buy the house Marta and Luis believed they owned.

Then he charged them for it for nearly thirty years.

“He stole from you and made us pay him,” Luis said.

“Yes.”

“Why come back now?”

“Because Northline is trying to buy every property on this block. I think Martin wants to destroy whatever records still connect those companies to my trust.”

A car door slammed across the street.

An older man stepped onto the sidewalk.

He wore a charcoal coat and leaned on a black cane. His hair was white now, but I recognized the narrow eyes and carefully controlled expression.

Martin Vale.

Marta gripped my arm.

“That’s him,” she whispered. “That’s the man who took you away.”

Martin stared at me as if he had seen a ghost.

Then he looked toward the folders in Luis’s hands.

“You should never have come back,” he said.

Two members of my security team moved forward.

Martin lifted one hand.

“I’m not here to cause trouble.”

“You caused trouble twenty-three years ago,” I said.

His eyes moved over my face.

“You always were dramatic.”

“You forged their death certificates.”

“I protected you from an unhealthy attachment.”

“They tried to adopt me.”

“They were unlicensed food vendors living below the poverty line.”

“They gave me more safety than any home you selected.”

Martin’s expression hardened.

“You ran away from every placement.”

“Because the people you chose hurt children.”

“That is an accusation.”

“It is a fact.”

Marta stepped beside me.

“Why did you tell us he didn’t want to see us?”

Martin looked at her as though she were an inconvenience.

“Because children need stability. You encouraged his disobedience.”

“I fed a hungry boy.”

“You interfered with a legal placement.”
