I looked at her.

“You’re not strangers.”

My voice broke.

I removed an old photograph from my wallet.

It showed Marta and Luis standing beside the same cart more than two decades earlier.

Between them was a thin eleven-year-old boy wearing a coat several sizes too large.

Marta covered her mouth.

Luis nearly dropped the envelope.

The boy in the photograph had been called Gabriel Reyes.

He had slept behind their food cart after running away from a violent foster home.

Marta fed him every evening.

Luis taught him how to count change, read receipts, and repair the cart’s broken burner.

For almost a year, they treated him like a son.

Then one morning, a foster-care director came with police officers and took him away.

Marta and Luis were told he would be placed with a family in another state.

They wrote letters.

Every one came back unopened.

The young man in the navy suit took one step closer.

“You gave me food when I had nothing.”

Marta stared at my face.

The same dark eyes.

The small scar above my left eyebrow.

Her knees weakened.

“Gabriel?”

I smiled through tears.

“I’m sorry it took me so long to come home.”

She threw her arms around me.

For a second, I was too shocked to move.

Then I held her.

Luis stood beside us with tears running down his face. I pulled him into the embrace.

The suit, the car, the security team, and the billion-dollar company no longer mattered.

I was eleven years old again.

I was cold.

I was hungry.

And someone had finally opened a door.

“I looked for you,” Marta whispered.

“I know that now.”

“We never stopped.”

“I know.”

Luis placed both hands on my shoulders.

“They told us you didn’t want to see us.”

“They told me you were dead.”

Marta pulled back.

“What?”

I reached into the envelope and removed two photocopied death certificates.

One carried Marta’s name.

The other carried Luis’s.

Both were false.

I had been thirteen when Martin Vale, the director of Bright Path Children’s Services, placed them in front of me.
