Samuel looked at Elena.

“You ready?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

He turned toward the mat.

“Everyone, open mat starts in five.”

Elena removed her hoodie.

Underneath was a plain black rash guard.

No belt.

No academy name.

Nothing.

Ryan stared at her.

For the first time, he wondered whether they had made a mistake.

And for the first time, Elena looked directly at him.

There was no anger in her eyes.

Only patience.

That bothered him more than anger would have.

 The Belt Nobody Recognized

Stonebridge became louder as the evening crowd arrived.

Mats were cleaned.

Water bottles appeared along the wall.

Wrestlers began drilling shots near one corner.

Two blue belts were already arguing over whether a particular escape worked against a heavier opponent.

Elena sat quietly near the edge of the mat.

She watched.

That was all.

Ryan noticed.

He had expected nervousness.

Instead, she observed.

Her eyes moved constantly.

Not anxiously.

Precisely.

She watched foot placement.

Hip position.

Hand fighting.

Distance.

When two purple belts began drilling a passing sequence, Elena watched their feet rather than their hands.

Ryan noticed that.

He didn't know why.

But he noticed.

Tyler walked past.

“You want to warm up?”

Elena looked up.

“Sure.”

“With me?”

“If that's okay.”

Tyler smiled.

“Of course.”

Ryan glanced over.

He knew exactly what Tyler was doing.

Tyler wasn't going to hurt her.

He was simply going to establish the hierarchy.

At least, that's what he thought.

They stepped onto the mat.

Tyler crouched.

“Light?”

Elena nodded.

“Light.”

They touched hands.

Tyler moved first.

He reached for a collar tie.

Elena stepped back.

Not dramatically.

Just enough.

Tyler tried again.

This time she redirected his wrist and moved outside his lead foot.

He followed.

She moved again.

No attack.

No obvious technique.

Just distance.

Tyler frowned.

“Come on.”

Elena waited.

Tyler shot for a single leg.

His hands closed around her leg.

For half a second, he smiled.

Then Elena rotated her knee outward.

Her hand dropped to his shoulder.

She stepped over his trapped arm.

Tyler suddenly found himself off balance.

He recovered before falling.

The exchange lasted maybe two seconds.

Ryan had seen it.

Marcus had too.

Tyler stood.

“What was that?”

Elena shrugged.

“Just a reaction.”

Tyler smiled again.

“Okay.”

This time he moved faster.

Elena moved faster too.

He feinted high and attacked low.

She sprawled.

He transitioned immediately.

Elena posted.

Tyler tried to circle behind.

She turned with him.

Again.

Again.

Again.

After twenty seconds, Tyler stepped away.

His breathing had changed.

Elena's had not.

Ryan looked at Marcus.

Marcus said nothing.

Tyler wiped his mouth.

“You've trained.”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Elena hesitated.

“Different places.”

Tyler laughed.

“You always answer questions like that?”

“Sometimes.”

Before Tyler could respond, Samuel called across the room.

“Tyler.”

Tyler looked over.

“Yeah?”

“Pick somebody else.”

Tyler frowned.

“Why?”

“Because Elena isn't here to prove anything to you.”

Silence.

Tyler nodded slowly.

“Okay.”

He stepped off the mat.

Elena followed.

Samuel approached her.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

“You don't have to roll with anyone you don't want to.”

“I know.”

Samuel smiled.

“Good.”

Ryan approached.

“I'll go.”

Marcus looked at him.

“Ryan.”

Ryan ignored him.

He stepped onto the mat.

“Five minutes?”

Elena looked at Samuel.

Samuel's expression was unreadable.

Then Elena nodded.

“Five.”

Ryan smiled.

“Let's see what you've got.”

 The First Round

Ryan Cole had fought larger men.

He had fought smaller men.

He had fought wrestlers, judokas, collegiate athletes, hobbyists, veterans, teenagers, and people who believed YouTube had prepared them for combat.

He had learned that size mattered.

Experience mattered.

Timing mattered.

But confidence mattered too.

And right now, Elena Cruz looked almost too calm.

They began standing.

Ryan took the center.

Elena stayed light on her feet.

He reached.

She moved.

He reached again.

She moved again.

Ryan changed levels.

Elena sprawled.

He switched to a body lock.

She framed against his shoulder.

Ryan tightened his grip.

For the first time, Elena's expression changed.

Not fear.

Concentration.

Ryan drove forward.

Elena stepped backward.

He expected resistance.

Instead, she gave him space.

His momentum carried him farther than expected.

She pivoted.

Ryan stumbled.

He recovered immediately.

The room had become quiet.

Marcus stopped drilling.
