Tyler watched from the wall.
Ryan attacked again.
This time he secured a single leg.
He lifted.
Elena hopped once.
Twice.
Then she turned her hips.
Ryan's grip loosened.
She dropped her weight.
He lost the leg.
Elena immediately established inside control.
Ryan tried to reset.
She didn't allow him.
She moved.
One step.
Two.
Three.
Suddenly Ryan was backing toward the edge.
He stopped.
They separated.
Ryan breathed heavily.
Elena was breathing normally.
He looked at her.
“How long have you been training?”
Elena didn't answer.
Ryan smiled.
“You're not going to tell me?”
“Not yet.”
That irritated him.
He attacked.
This time he used his wrestling.
He shot hard.
Elena sprawled.
Ryan drove through.
They hit the mat.
Ryan landed on top.
A few people cheered.
He established half guard.
Elena immediately framed.
Ryan tried to flatten her.
She turned onto her side.
He applied pressure.
She moved again.
He passed one leg.
She recovered.
He passed again.
She recovered again.
Ryan's forehead began to sweat.
“Stop moving,” he muttered.
Elena looked at him.
“No.”
Ryan heard laughter from somewhere near the wall.
Not mocking him.
Nervous laughter.
He increased pressure.
Elena waited.
Then she moved her left hand.
Ryan didn't notice.
She caught his wrist.
Pulled.
Ryan's base shifted.
She slid her knee inside.
Then her hips moved.
In one fluid sequence, Elena reversed him.
Ryan landed on his back.
The room went silent.
Elena did not immediately attack.
She simply stabilized.
Ryan stared upward.
Her knee was near his hip.
Her hand controlled his wrist.
She could have continued.
Instead, she released him.
Ryan rolled away.
He sat up.
Elena stood.
“You okay?”
Ryan stared at her.
“Yes.”
“Good.”
He stood slowly.
They continued.
But something had changed.
Ryan no longer thought he was testing a beginner.
He was trying to understand who she was.
The Name on the Wall
After open mat, Ryan stayed behind.
So did Marcus and Tyler.
Elena had already left the mat area.
She sat near the front desk filling out a final piece of paperwork Samuel had requested.
Ryan walked toward his coach.
“Who is she?”
Samuel looked up.
“Why?”
“Because she's not a normal black belt.”
Marcus crossed his arms.
“She didn't move like anyone I've seen.”
Tyler nodded.
“She knew where I was going before I went.”
Samuel leaned against the counter.
“You three mocked her.”
Ryan looked away.
“Maybe.”
“You did.”
Nobody answered.
Samuel sighed.
“You've been training long enough to know better.”
Ryan looked at him.
“So tell us.”
Samuel was quiet.
Then he said:
“Her name is Elena Cruz.”
“We know that.”
“She trained under Gabriel Ortega.”
Marcus's expression changed.
“Gabriel Ortega?”
Samuel nodded.
The name meant something.
Even Tyler had heard it.
Ortega had been a respected competitor and instructor years earlier.
He had disappeared from the competitive scene after a serious knee injury.
But before that, he had trained several elite competitors.
Ryan frowned.
“Is she one of his students?”
Samuel nodded.
“For almost ten years.”
Tyler stared.
“Ten years?”
“Yes.”
Marcus asked quietly, “Why haven't we heard of her?”
“Because she didn't compete under her own name for most of that time.”
Ryan frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Samuel looked toward Elena.
“She spent several years helping coach Ortega's women's competition team.”
“Then why come here?”
Samuel smiled faintly.
“Because she moved.”
“From where?”
“San Diego.”
The three men exchanged looks.
Samuel continued.
“She isn't here to challenge anyone. She isn't here to take your positions. She isn't here because she wants attention.”
“Then why?”
“To train.”
That simple answer somehow made the room quieter.
Elena approached.
“Coach?”
Samuel turned.
“Yes?”
“Is the paperwork finished?”
“Yes.”
She nodded.
“Thank you.”
Ryan looked at her.
“So you're really a black belt?”
Elena smiled.
“Yes.”
“From Ortega?”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Three years.”
Ryan's eyebrows rose.
Marcus looked at Tyler.
Tyler looked embarrassed.
Samuel picked up the paperwork.
“Actually, there's something you should know.”
He handed Elena a small envelope.
She looked at it.
“What's this?”
“Your replacement belt.”
Elena opened the envelope.
Inside was a black belt.
Simple.
No stripes.
No embroidered name.
Nothing fancy.
She looked at Samuel.
“Thank you.”
Then she turned.
For the first time, Ryan noticed something.
The belt wasn't new.
The fabric was worn.
The edges were faded.
