It had clearly been used for years.

Ryan suddenly understood.

She hadn't arrived without a belt because she didn't have one.

She had arrived without one because she hadn't needed to prove it.

 The Challenge

The following week, the atmosphere changed.

Nobody openly mocked Elena.

But nobody knew how to treat her either.

Some people avoided her.

Others watched her.

A few asked questions.

She answered politely.

Then trained.

One evening, Tyler approached her.

“Can we roll?”

Elena looked up.

“Sure.”

Tyler nodded.

They started.

This time there was no teasing.

No audience performance.

Tyler moved carefully.

Elena noticed.

“You don't have to be careful.”

“I know.”

“Then don't.”

Tyler smiled.

“Okay.”

The round became intense.

Tyler attacked with speed.

Elena countered with timing.

He passed.

She recovered.

He attacked an arm.

She defended.

He transitioned.

She followed.

Neither gained a decisive advantage.

When the timer sounded, they separated.

Tyler sat back.

“You're really good.”

“Thank you.”

“I thought you were going to destroy me.”

“I wasn't trying to.”

“That might be worse.”

Elena laughed.

It was the first time Tyler had heard her laugh.

Then Ryan walked over.

“Tyler.”

Tyler looked up.

“What?”

“Let's go.”

Tyler frowned.

“You want to roll with me?”

Ryan nodded.

They began.

Elena watched from the wall.

Ryan was more aggressive than usual.

He wasn't attacking Tyler.

He was trying to prove something to himself.

The round became increasingly physical.

Finally Samuel stepped between them.

“Enough.”

Ryan stopped.

Samuel looked at him.

“This isn't a competition between you.”

Ryan wiped his forehead.

“I know.”

“No, you don't.”

Samuel looked around the room.

“This academy isn't a ladder where everyone needs to know who is above them.”

Nobody spoke.

Samuel continued.

“Black belts are supposed to know the difference between confidence and insecurity.”

Ryan lowered his eyes.

Elena stood.

“Coach.”

Samuel turned.

“Yes?”

“I need to tell you something.”

“What?”

“I may not be here much longer.”

The room seemed to stop.

Samuel frowned.

“Why?”

“I got a job offer.”

“Where?”

“Colorado.”

Tyler looked surprised.

“When?”

“Next month.”

Samuel nodded slowly.

Ryan looked at her.

“So you're leaving?”

“Probably.”

Ryan didn't know why the answer bothered him.

He had known her for less than two weeks.

Yet suddenly the idea of her leaving felt wrong.

Not because she was the strongest person in the gym.

Because she had changed something.

She had made everyone look at themselves.

And Ryan wasn't sure he liked what he saw.

 The Storm

Two weeks later, Stonebridge hosted a regional open mat.

More than fifty grapplers arrived.

Some came from neighboring academies.

Several were experienced competitors.

The gym became crowded.

Elena was helping at the registration table when a man walked through the door.

He was tall.

Broad.

Heavily muscled.

A brown belt wrapped around his waist.

His name was Cole Mercer.

He had a reputation.

Not because he was unbeatable.

Because he was loud.

He looked around the gym.

Then saw Elena.

“New?”

Elena nodded.

“Yeah.”

Cole smiled.

“What belt?”

“Black.”

He laughed.

“Seriously?”

Ryan stepped forward.

“She's a black belt.”

Cole looked at him.

“I'm not asking you.”

Elena remained calm.

“Black.”

Cole smiled.

“Prove it.”

Samuel immediately intervened.

“No.”

Cole laughed.

“I was joking.”

“No, you weren't.”

Cole looked around.

The room was watching.

He shrugged.

“Fine.”

Elena went back to registration.

Cole walked away.

Ten minutes later, he was rolling with a purple belt.

The round became rough.

Too rough.

The purple belt tapped.

Cole didn't release immediately.

Samuel stepped forward.

“Let go.”

Cole released.

“Sorry.”

But his smile said otherwise.

The next round began.

Cole chose another partner.

Again, too aggressive.

Again, the partner tapped.

Again, Cole held the position slightly too long.

Ryan watched.

Marcus watched.

Tyler watched.

Elena watched too.

Then Cole approached her.

“You want a round?”

“No.”

“Scared?”

“No.”

“Then why not?”

“Because I don't need to.”

Cole laughed.

“That's convenient.”

Elena looked at him.

“You're trying to prove something.”

Cole's smile disappeared.

“What?”

“You're not trying to train.”

He stared at her.

Then said:

“One round.”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

Cole leaned closer.

“You call yourself a black belt.”

Elena finally stood.

“I do.”

“Then roll.”

Samuel stepped forward.

“Cole.”

But Elena raised one hand.
