“I care.”

“Then why don't you show it?”

“Because I decide what deserves my attention.”

Ryan smiled.

“That sounds difficult.”

“It is.”

He nodded.

Then asked:

“Would you train with me?”

Elena looked at him.

“Sure.”

The next round was different.

Ryan didn't try to dominate.

Elena didn't try to prove herself.

They trained.

For the first time, Ryan noticed how much he learned.

Her transitions were subtle.

Her defense was efficient.

Her breathing was controlled.

And she explained things without making him feel stupid.

After the round, Ryan sat on the mat.

“I get it now.”

Elena smiled.

“Get what?”

“Why Coach wanted you here.”

She looked toward Samuel.

“He didn't want me here.”

Ryan frowned.

“He invited you.”

“Yes.”

“But?”

“I think he wanted all of you to remember something.”

“What?”

Elena looked at him.

“That black belts are supposed to keep learning.”

 The Tournament

The final week before Elena's departure, Stonebridge hosted its annual in-house tournament.

Ryan volunteered as referee.

Marcus helped organize brackets.

Tyler competed.

Elena didn't register.

At least, not initially.

Then one of the women's competitors injured her ankle during warm-ups.

Samuel approached Elena.

“You don't have to.”

“I know.”

“But?”

Elena smiled.

“I'll compete.”

The announcement spread quickly.

Elena entered the advanced division.

Her first opponent was a strong blue belt.

Elena won by points.

The second was a purple belt with excellent wrestling.

Elena won by submission.

The final opponent was a black belt from another academy.

The woman was taller.

Stronger.

More experienced.

The match was close.

Neither scored early.

Then Elena found an opening.

She took it.

The match ended by submission.

The gym erupted.

Elena stood.

She did not celebrate wildly.

She simply bowed.

The other competitor bowed back.

Then they hugged.

Ryan smiled from the edge of the mat.

Marcus shook his head.

“She really doesn't care about showing off.”

Tyler laughed.

“No.”

Samuel watched silently.

He knew the truth.

Elena wasn't proving she was good enough.

She had never needed to.

She was simply remembering who she had been before grief made her smaller.

 The Question

After the tournament, several younger students approached Elena.

“Can you show me that escape?”

“How did you pass her guard?”

“Why didn't you use the submission earlier?”

Elena answered every question.

For nearly an hour.

Ryan watched.

He realized something.

She wasn't impressive because she could defeat people.

She was impressive because she made people want to become better.

Marcus approached her.

“I owe you an apology too.”

Elena smiled.

“For what?”

“I laughed.”

“You did.”

“I shouldn't have.”

“No.”

Marcus nodded.

Then he asked:

“Why didn't you say anything?”

Elena looked at him.

“Would you have listened?”

Marcus laughed.

“Probably not.”

“Exactly.”

He smiled.

“You're dangerous.”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

Marcus raised an eyebrow.

“I'm serious.”

“So am I.”

She looked at the students practicing nearby.

“Dangerous people want you to know they're dangerous.”

Marcus considered that.

“Then what are you?”

Elena smiled.

“Just someone who trained for a long time.”

 The Last Night

Elena's final night at Stonebridge arrived too quickly.

The academy held a small dinner afterward.

Pizza.

Drinks.

Bad music from someone's phone.

Tyler gave Elena a small gift.

A framed photograph of the academy.

Ryan handed her a Stonebridge shirt.

Marcus gave her a new belt.

Elena laughed when she saw it.

“You already gave me one.”

“That one's from Coach.”

“This one's from all of us.”

She accepted it.

“Thank you.”

Samuel waited until everyone left.

He handed her an envelope.

She opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Her father.

Standing beside Samuel at an old tournament.

Elena stared at it.

“You had this?”

“For years.”

Her eyes became wet.

“He was proud of you.”

“I hope so.”

“He was.”

Elena hugged Samuel.

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Then Samuel said:

“Don't disappear again.”

Elena smiled through tears.

“I won't.”

 The New Girl

Six months later, a new girl walked into Stonebridge.

She was nineteen.

Nervous.

Carrying a cheap gym bag.

She stood near the door.

A purple belt looked at her.

“You here for beginner class?”

She nodded.

“Yeah.”

“Shoes go over there.”

She looked confused.

Then another student laughed.

The girl lowered her eyes.

Ryan immediately recognized the moment.

He walked over.

“Hey.”

She looked up.
